A British-American post-punk rock group called The Pretenders has made their name known for their lyrics and raw, frequently unadorned musicianship influenced by new wave of the 1970s and 1980s, in addition to their tenacity in the face of early tragedy.
The band was founded in March 1978. Chrissie Hynde, the band's founder and primary songwriter, sang lead vocals and rhythm guitar in the original lineup. James Honeyman-Scott provided keyboards and backing vocals, Pete Farndon provided bass guitar and backing vocals, and Martin Chambers handled drums, backing vocals, and percussion. The band went through a number of lineup changes when Honeyman-Scott and Farndon passed away in 1982 and 1983, respectively; Hynde has been the sole constant member.
The band’s debut single, a rendition of the Kinks song "Stop Your Sobbing," was released in January 1979 and received positive reviews. It was followed by "Kid" in June 1979. "Brass in Pocket," which the band released in January 1980, peaked at No. 1 in the UK and No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.
Their self-titled debut album, which debuted in January 1980, was well received both critically and commercially in the US and the UK. Produced by Chris Thomas, it is considered one of the greatest debut albums ever, having been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone (no. 155), VH1 (no. 52), and other publications.
This popularity was primarily due to the band's distinctive sound, which was highlighted by Honeyman-Scott's special fusion of raw, throaty guitar textures and shimmering, semi-spoken vocals by Hynde.
Despite going through multiple lineup changes, The Pretenders put out eight albums between 1986 and 2020, but none of them was as successful commercially as their previous efforts.

In 2005, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
