John Legend is an actual legend. “Legend” is also the title of his latest studio album released in 2022. The multi-talented artist can do everything from hitting all the high notes, to producing music, and even acting.

He released his first album, “Get Lifted,” in 2004 and his rise to fame began there. The album reached Billboard’s Top 100 Albums chart and sold over 2 million copies in the United States alone. He received 9 nominations at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards for this album alone. His classic song “Ordinary People” was released as a single on the album.

John Legend is the first Black male performer to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, earning him a spot in the EGOT club. In 2015, he received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Glory" from the film "Selma," and in 2018, he portrayed Jesus Christ in NBC's production of the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar," earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for his acting part and an Emmy award as the show's producer. To date, he has received a total of 12 Grammy Awards.

When he was fifteen years old, John wrote an essay published in the Dayton Daily News outlining his future goals: “I envision a successful musical career that will allow me to obtain high visibility in the community. This, in turn, will put me in a position of great influence, which I will utilize in order to be an advocate for the advancement of Blacks in America.”

True enough, he’s met and exceeded his goals.

Another great thing about John Legend is that he does not put his voice and privilege to waste. He is also an activist. To address issues such as poverty, school reform, and criminal justice reform, John has founded several foundations, including the Show Me Campaign and FREE AMERICA. John's dedication to social activity has frequently intersected with his artistic talent, as seen by "Glory," a song about the American civil rights movement that he co-wrote with performing artist Common for the award-winning 2014 film Selma. The song went on to earn the two artists an Academy Award.
