Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Earl Lee conducts Simon, Schumann, and Beethoven. The show comes to Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts on the 18th of August 2024. The show features Yo Yo Ma on cello.

Conductor and cellist Earl Lee began learning the piano at age five and the cello at age nine. He was born in Yeosu, South Korea. In 1995, the whole family moved to Vancouver, Canada, and in 1999, they made their home in Toronto. When Lee was sixteen years old, he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied cello with Orlando Cole and Peter Wiley. Lee started his career as a cellist with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra.
At the age of 24, Earl Lee received a diagnosis of focal dystonia. He took the initiative to look for a cure for his illness; he even flew to South Korea to consult with a renowned acupuncture expert, but his efforts were in vain. He sought the advice of Spanish specialists in the field, but the recuperation was erratic and extremely slow. He used music as his outlet.
Lee studied with David Soyer at the Juilliard School, where he earned his master's degree in cello playing after graduating from The Curtis Institute of Music in 2005. In order to make the move to conducting, Lee worked with Ignat Solzhenitsyn starting in 2010. George Manahan guided Lee to earn his master's degree in conducting at the Manhattan School of Music in 2013. Hugh Wolff was his postgraduate conducting instructor at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Lee served as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's RBC Resident Conductor from 2015 to 2018. From 2018 to 2022, Lee was the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Associate Conductor. In August 2021, Lee was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, Lee was named Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra's music director.
As one of Canada's most promising up-and-coming conductors, Earl Lee was recognized in 2018 with the Ontario Arts Council's 50th Anniversary Heinz Unger Award. In 2013, conductor Kurt Masur selected Lee for the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Scholarship, which allowed him to travel to Leipzig to study the music and life of the composer. In 2013, he was also awarded the Ansbacher Fellowship by the Vienna Philharmonic and the American Austrian Foundation, which entailed a six-week stay at the Salzburg Festival.
